{"id":3920,"date":"2020-04-15T18:37:35","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T16:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.human-rights-year.com\/?p=3920"},"modified":"2020-12-29T18:42:00","modified_gmt":"2020-12-29T17:42:00","slug":"memorial-recognises-a-further-130-jehovah-s-witnesses-as-victims-of-politically-motivated-prosecutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.human-rights-year.com\/de\/2020\/04\/15\/memorial-recognises-a-further-130-jehovah-s-witnesses-as-victims-of-politically-motivated-prosecutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorial recognises a further 130 Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses as victims of politically motivated prosecutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Memorial Human Rights Centre has recognised 24 Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses as\u00a0political prisoners, of\u00a0whom 15 have been remanded in\u00a0custody and nine are under house arrest.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0have found a\u00a0further 106 Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses to\u00a0be\u00a0victims of\u00a0politically-motivated criminal prosecutions on\u00a0whom pre-trial restrictive measures have been imposed that fall short of\u00a0derivation of\u00a0liberty (for a\u00a0list of\u00a0names, see below).<\/p>\n<p>The majority of\u00a0Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses have been charged with organising the activities of\u00a0an\u00a0extremist organisation (Part 1 of\u00a0Article 282.2 of\u00a0the Russian Criminal Code), participation in\u00a0the same (Part 2 of\u00a0Article 282.2 of\u00a0the Russian Criminal Code) or\u00a0recruitment into the organisation (Part 1.1. of\u00a0Article 282.2 of\u00a0the Russian Criminal Code). A\u00a0number have also been charged with financing extremist activities (Part One of\u00a0Article 282.3 of\u00a0the Russian Criminal Code).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Total figures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Altogether our list contains the names of\u00a049 Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses who are political prisoners and have been deprived of\u00a0their liberty on\u00a0charges related to\u00a0their religious belief. Thirty-two of\u00a0them have been remanded in\u00a0custody, 17 are under house arrest. A\u00a0further two hundred and eighty believers are being prosecuted without having been deprived of\u00a0their liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Nine Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses have already been sentenced to\u00a0terms in\u00a0prison of\u00a0up\u00a0to\u00a0six years. Six have been given suspended sentences. Ten have been given non-custodial sentences or\u00a0penalties that were quashed because of\u00a0the decriminalisation of\u00a0certain articles of\u00a0the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0total of\u00a0339 Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses have been prosecuted since the full-scale campaign against this group of\u00a0believers began in\u00a0August 2017. The number continues to\u00a0grow.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0list of\u00a0those prosecuted on\u00a0charges of\u00a0belonging to\u00a0the Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses\u2019 faith is\u00a0available on\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/memohrc.org\/ru\/special-projects\/spisok-presleduemyh-po-obvineniyu-v-prinadlezhnosti-k-svidetelyam-iegovy\">website<\/a>\u00a0and is\u00a0regularly updated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/memohrc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/jw_eng.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img src=\"https:\/\/memohrc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/image_to_text\/public\/images\/jw_eng.jpg?itok=jOCgiSfn\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0consider that the designation of\u00a0the Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses\u2019 organisations as\u00a0extremist is\u00a0unjustifiable and violates the rights to\u00a0freedom of\u00a0conscience and association, while the criminal prosecution of\u00a0members of\u00a0this peaceful faith is\u00a0unlawful and discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0demand that those Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses held in\u00a0custody and under house arrest be\u00a0immediately released, and that charges be\u00a0dropped against all Jehovah\u2019s\u00a0Witnesses.<\/p>\n<p><em>Recognition of\u00a0an\u00a0individual as\u00a0a\u00a0political prisoner, or\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0prosecution as\u00a0politically motivated, does not imply that Memorial Human Rights Centre shares or\u00a0approves the individual\u2019s\u00a0views, statements or\u00a0actions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can support all political prisoners by\u00a0donating to\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politzeky.ru\/fond-pomoshhi-politzakljuchennym\/5118\/fond-pomoshhi-politzakljuchjonnym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fund to\u00a0Support Political Prisoners<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0the Union of\u00a0Solidarity with Political Prisoners via PayPal, using the\u00a0e-wallet\u00a0at\u00a0helppoliticalprisoners@gmail.com.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15 new defendants remanded in\u00a0custody<\/strong>:<br \/>\n1.
